Solving the Web of Complexity

Business Acumen Queensland- December 2005

Having a presence on the web is about increasing business opportunities but it can be complex, costly and time consuming.

Recognising this and the frustration experienced by business people provided Ian Exaudi, of Queensland company Creative Intersection, with his motivation to create a new, more flexible content management system (CMS).

Mr Exaudi said the current trend towards building sites that were resources was an effort to encourage repeat visits by individuals, in contrast to "brochure-ware sites" which simply show an online wersion of a company's glossy brochure.

"Resource websites have a need to be updated regularly, hence the proliferation of content management systems - which are designed to enable the content of a website rather than having to give the content to a web developer, thus removing the associated costs and bottle-necks," Mr Exaudi said.

But developing a new CMS was not only about simplifying the process of maintaining a website for the clients.

"Every programmer who builds a site with dynamic aspects, that can be changed or updated, builds the database and then builds the administration backend around that to allow the administration user to log in and make the changes they require," Mr Exaudi said.

"The downfall of that is everytime they want to give the same functionality to a new client they have to got to virtually start from scratch or at the very least make significant changes."

"What I wanted was to develop a system that allowed a consistent framework to be redeployed for different projects and within different designs while maintaining complete flexibility so each website can be completely tailored for the client," he said.
